ABOUT US
Our Inspiration
Thomas Adden Player, Jr.
Feb 4, 1940 - Jan 8, 2024
TAPS at Carolina is named in reference to the "Taps" bugle call played to signal the end of a military day or during patriotic memorial ceremonies and in loving memory of Thomas Adden Player, or TAP.
Born in Orangeburg, SC, Thomas Adden Player, Jr. was known to many by many different names. Tommy, Animal, Frog, Capt. Player, TAP Attorney at Law, Dad, Pappy, no matter what you called him the response was likely to be the same: a hearty greeting and a big hug. He passed away on January 9 at the age of 83. He attended Furman University, where he was student body president, lettered in football, and even managed to join the cheerleading squad with his partner-in-crime, Don Sentell. Having majored in Russian History, he made the somewhat surprising move to attend Law School at the University of Virginia and from there served as a Captain in Army Intelligence in Korea.
In his loving and incredible memory, granddaughter Francesca Sayers (UNC '27) founded TAPS at Carolina to support active-duty soldiers and veterans within the Chapel Hill community. May this Club forever engrain TAP within the Carolina community.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to provide UNC students with the opportunity to support local veterans and active-duty soldiers in their times of need.
At TAPS at Carolina, we believe in giving back to those who have devoted their lives to our country.
We provide both military affiliated and non-military affiliated UNC students with the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of local veterans and active-duty soldiers.
Join us in building a community that honors and supports our heroes.
OUR VALUES
Hover over the images below to learn more about our core three tenants.

Involvement
Engaging the community is essential for building meaningful connections between non-military-affiliated students and our nation's service members. Through hands-on volunteer work, students gain firsthand experience of the positive impact they can make on the lives of veterans and active-duty soldiers.

Education
Our goal is to deepen the understanding within our student community of what it truly means to be a veteran or active-duty soldier in today’s world. We achieve this through on-campus educational events and immersive volunteer opportunities that bring these experiences to life.

Advocacy
As the first club on campus to provide non-military-affiliated students with the opportunity to engage directly with veterans and active-duty soldiers, we are dedicated to highlighting the voices of this
often-underrepresented community through involvement and education.
